I Want to Believe

[Cross-posted from my MovableType Blog]

Now that work has returned to a (more) sustainable pace, I'm finding time & energy to catch up on things for which I'd pretty much given up on having time.

I'm WAAAAAAY behind on Battlestar Galactica[1], and because I'm catching up, I'm seeing (well, "fast-forwarding") commercials that are months old.

Along the way, I caught the teaser for The Lost Room. I was immediately reminded of the "House of Renunciation[2]," and thus my interest was piqued. I want to believe. I want it to be good. But I also know the quality of most "Sci-Fi Original Series"[3]. I've seen more commercials since that first that indicate my first impression is probably off base, and yet I can't completely shake it.

And here we have the darker side of Tivo. Baiting me with teasers for shows that have already come & gone.

So, did anyone see it? Was it any good? Is it worth tracking down?

[1] For those of you following along at home, I just watched a few back to back, and I just saw the boxing episode. Yeah, that behind.

[2] Dammit, I can't find a decent link for this one. Have a generic Unknown Armies link instead. Hmm, that one is probably less than helpful, I guess you could try the original source.

[3] Man-squito. 'nuf said.

I once dared a friend of mine to make a superhero RPG character based on Mansquito. He did.

I liked Lost Room, but I'm not sure where your tastes lie.

Just an addendum: I like those old-school MAc adventure games like Sam and Max, or Indiana Jones, or Monkey Island, where you have to go around and collect items, and solve problems by using certain items together with the environment. Lost Room was kinda like watching one of those. Which is why I liked it. I think it would make a really good adventure game, too.

Ok, but this fills me with a bit of dread. I like those kinds of games, but as a general rule they don't make very good spectator sports.

Well, it's definitely not schlocky. I think the story outweighed the how-can-we-cleverly-use-the-Objects-together parts. I don't think you should buy it (though I might, at some point) but definitely put it on your Wishlist and give it a go. And if I get it on DVD before you get a chance to watch it, I'll loan it to you.

Honestly, just having one person say, "No, it wasn't complete schlock." is enough make me try to find a copy. (Though that may go no farther than a Tivo WishList)

Thanks!

I enjoyed The Lost Room. They definitely made an effort with this one -- the story, plotting, acting and overall production value were more to the level of the BG miniseries than those Traci Lords one-shots they've been doing.

It was kinda like those Tim Powers novels about the guys with the cards...

That's what I'd been hoping. Thanks for your input.

...And the reminder that a number of people seem to like Tim Powers novels, and that I should investigate. :)

Hee hee.

I loved The Lost Room. I wish I had it on DVD; and I hope that they make a series of it. I found it rather fascinating. Of course, I like any narrative with lots of "rules."

Great, thanks for another vote!

I see your point about "rules," (and I may even agree with you) but I can't help thinking that something can conform to that and still be terrible (though not in the way I was worried about in this case)

Lost Room
I saw it, and yes- it's verrry Unknown Armies.
It wasn't bad for a "Sci-Fi Original Series."
That said, before you go traipsing about looking for it on DVD, you mightwant to check programming as that channel plays the heck out of their 'orignal series' at all hours of the night. You still might be able to Tivo it.

Re: Lost Room
What she said. We kept looking at each other while watching it and saying "That was *such* a UA moment!" Of course, we didn't see all of it (it aired in three episodes of two hours apiece; we've seen the first two), so it's still possible that it got all screwed up at the end. I'd be suprised though, it seemed as though it was on a good track...

Re: Lost Room
Actually, I did see all of it.
Neenar!

Wonderful! I'm very glad I asked!

Err, now you're scaring me. "Made for TV Mini-series." You never saw Wild Palms, did you?

Great! I was hoping you (one or both of) you guys (or mgrasso) had seen it, since you have the best chance of knowing what I meant, (and possibly also what I like about it).

That's an excellent idea, I don't know why I didn't think of it. Unfortunately, it's not playing in the next two weeks, but I now have a WishList set up so I will hopefully catch it eventually. Thanks!

Great, and will be available on Netflix
The Lost Room was great, and you'll be able to get it on Netflix if you want to watch it before you buy. But I also recommend buying the DVD. Also feel free to write to Sci Fi and tell them to re-run it.
